Stigmatizing women and girls because they menstruate sounds like an ancient, archaic issue. Perhaps something you might expect from a primitive culture, or one with an ultra-strict religious ideology. The idea that females would be excluded, discriminated against, or shamed because of their periods in the west and especially in America, seems unfathomable. And yet, regardless of religion, politics, or regional culture, it goes on every day. In every state. In every town across the country.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day was started to end that reality around the globe by the year 2030. Started in 2014, and championed since by a Berlin-based nonprofit called WASH United working to create a world where all people benefit from safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, World Menstrual Hygiene Day seeks to bring non-profits, government agencies, the private sector, individuals, and the media together to “promote good menstrual health and hygiene” but even more:
- To break the silence
- To raise awareness
- To change negative social norms around menstrual health and hygiene
- To engage decision makers to increase political priority
- To catalyze action at global, national, and local levels
THAT is where She Supply comes in.
At She Supply, we’re committed to helping end period poverty in North Texas by collecting and distributing period products FREE to women and girls in need through more than 20 partners in DFW. In 2023, we collected and distributed more than 500,000 products. Our goal for this calendar year is to collect and distribute “ONE MILLION more in 2024!”
That’s only possible when we work together.
Have you ever considered that women who struggle to afford tampons and pads are unable to go to work one week out of every month? Or that their daughters have to miss school one week out of every month because they can’t afford the feminine hygiene they need? At She Supply, our mission is to restore a sense of dignity and cleanliness back to women and girls living in less fortunate circumstances. But we can’t do it alone.
Every $25 donated to She Supply buys one woman or one girl period products for an entire year. Yes, you read that right. For the cost of a pizza, two movie tickets, or three of your favorite lattes, you could send a woman to work or a girl to school for an entire year. That’s life changing.
Menstrual discrimination happens every day all over the world. But it doesn’t have to happen here.
This month on May 28, or any time before or after, to honor World Menstrual Hygiene Day, or simply the families whose lives it changes, make the commitment to make a difference.
Here are three easy ways to do that:
